Elizabeth's First Steps 1 Year Later

It was one year ago today that Elizabeth took her first steps with the help of a walker.

When we first got the diagnosis that Elizabeth had very severe brain bleeds and she had Cerebral Palsy we had no idea she would be able to talk let alone walk. When she did this for the first time my eyes instantly filled with tears. Liz is so strong and a fighter.

Elizabeth continues to have physical and occupational therapy each week and she has worked so hard. I am so proud of her.

It's one year later and not only is she walking, but she is now running and working on jumping.

Summer Activities for Your Preemie

Check out my latest blog on Preemie Babies 101's blog on summer activities:

Summer Activities for Your Preemie

The sun is out. The weather is warmer. It’s finally summer!

If you are anything like me, you worked really hard to keep your preemie home and safe from RSV and the flu all winter long. It’s time to reward yourself and your little one with some fun in the sun.

First things first, give yourself a pat on the back.  You have made it through, and you did a great job keeping your child healthy.

Summer is finally here so it’s time to go exploring with your little one. You can make the best of your summer and you don’t even have to spend a lot of money. You can also have a good time and you don’t even need to leave your home.  Here are a few summer activities you can do outside the home or right in your own backyard.

Let’s start with out of the home:
Find a local farm and check out some animals. It’ll be a great opportunity to work on vocabulary and animal sounds. Some farms will even let you pet farm animals or pick your own fruit or vegetables.

Go on a picnic. Check out your local park and enjoy a swing ride.  Enjoy eating outside and experiencing nature. There are so many sounds to hear and it’ll be fun for them to watch other kids playing too.

-Check out your public library’s activity schedule. They usually have fun summer activities scheduled and normally they are free to the public with your library card

-Go on a nature walk. You and your little one can collect leaves, sticks, nuts and anything else. You can even make a nature picture together with what you found.

-Find a mommy and me swim class. The water is great for them to move around in. If swimming isn’t your thing, you could also try a mommy and me yoga class.

Visit the zoo. Everyone loves the zoo.

Visit a local amusement park. Many parks have age specific areas. Research this in advance and make sure they have an area in the park appropriate for your little one.

Visit a museum. There are children’s museums in major cities and normally they have areas within the museums that are designed for different age groups.

-Some of you may actually go on a vacation to the beach. If you are going on a bigger trip carefully plan. When your packing make a list of everything you need so you don’t forget anything. Ask your pediatrician for a recommendation on a good sunscreen.

If you can’t leave your house here are some ideas for summer activities at your home:

Set up a sand table or water table. You can fill your table up with almost anything and change it out often. You can try dry beans, garden soil, or even rice. Sand tables are great sensory opportunities for your preemie. Throw in some cups and a shovel and they are ready to play.

-Sidewalk chalk is always fun.

-Shaving cream on a mirror is a blast. Let your child explore in the shaving cream with their hands. Shaving cream is great for sensory and it is easy to clean up too.

– Paint a birdhouse. Paint the birdhouse together and then hang it in the backyard.

-Pretend to go camping. Put up a tent in your backyard or inside your house and pretend (or actually) go camping.

Get lots and lots of bubbles. Kids love bubbles and they are also very inexpensive.

Need any additional ideas? Check out community boards in your area and the local newspaper.

Whatever your summer plans are, just remember to not plan too much in one day and try to plan activities around your little one’s nap. Enjoy your summer and have fun!  Feel free to share your own summer ideas in the comments section.

NICU Journey

The NICU journey is a long and horrible one. I can remember getting up each morning and having no idea how the day would go. Sometimes it would be a slow and uneventful day and then sometimes I felt like I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

When your baby is in the hospital you can make no long term plans because you live for the day. The old saying goes "one step forward and two steps back," but really at times it felt more like one step forward and a bunch of steps back. There would be a couple of good days and then one of my girls (or both) would get really sick or need a new test and have a set back. As they get bigger it does get easier and better.

I can remember a nurse practitioner telling me that it really gets better once they reach 3 pounds. There  is a lot of truth to the statement, but the reality is Abigail and Elizabeth are micro preemies and we still have obstacles to face. I just keep the faith and enjoy the day. I still can't really make long term plans, but that's okay with me.

If you are NICU/preemie mom I recommend to try not to worry about the future because it will drive you crazy. And when you think about one step forward and two steps back, just remember there will be a step forward! That's what I have to keep telling myself.

Cabbage Patch Preemie

Did you know that in 1985  Cabbage Patch Kids actually came out with a preemie doll?
I recently came across an article about odd toys sold in the 80s. I was truly shocked when I saw this toy and just had to share it with all of you.

The preemie doll was three inches shorter than the regular Cabbage Patch Kids and came complete with tiny diapers and very little hair. They also smelled like baby powder like the "regular" Cabbage Patch Kids.

According to the article, The Preemie packaging boxes even listed information from the March of Dimes on the definition of a premature birth, along with details of complications and how to care for a Preemie. I would love to get the chance to see the information that was listed on how to "care for your preemie."
The Preemie Cabbage Patch brand even had accessories like additional preemie clothing you could purchase, sewing patterns to make your own clothes, paper dolls, and even a preemie cake pan. -Seriously a cake pan. Strange right?
This whole marketing idea was truly strange. I'm just glad they decided to stop the idea all together.

The Graham’s Foundation

The Graham’s Foundation is a foundation specifically for preemie parents. It is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 by Jennifer and Nick Hall in memory of their son, Graham.  The foundation supports the parents by providing free care packages during their journey in the NICU and transition home. The foundation's website provides a place for parents to share their stories and find support. When my girls were in the hospital my mother requested a care package for my girls from the foundation. The package was great and it let me know that people were thinking about me and I wasn't alone. To any NICU parents out there I really recommend that you visit the website. On the website you can communicate with other NICU/ preemie parents. The website even has cool merchandise you can buy like T-shirts and buttons to support preemies.

If you are not a preemie parent but you are looking for a way to support preemie/NICU parents, you can make a donation directly on the website or you can buy something at their online auction online. All the money they receive helps support preemie parents like me. I am very thankful for all the good work the Graham’s Foundation does.
